A giant Union Jack flag with an image of Her Majesty the Queen was today unveiled next to Heathrow’s runway 27R / 09L to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. It is the first time ever an image has been painted on the airfield.
The artwork measures 30 metres in length and is 540sq m in total and is three times the width of an A380’s fuselage. The patriotic emblem was created using more than 400 litres of red, white and blue paint. It has been positioned adjacent to the Northern runway so that passengers will be able to spot it from their flights, with Her Majesty’s profile overlooking the runway and terminals.
This is first time ever an image has been painted on the airfield.
High Level Photography were commissioned to make a photographic record of the event. The image was painted by a team during the night and High level were on hand to take images of the progress to be produced into a final time-lapse video. Using an additional mast vehicle we then took some daylight shots of the flag with aircraft operating on the runway during the course of the day.
In addition to the the ground based time-lapse and mast photography the High Level photographers’ then jumped into a helicopter to obtain some aerial photographs of the flag.
A selection of images and the time-lapse appear below.
